Susan Douglas

All Set

The point being that model SUSAN DOUGLAS is always elegant, always trim, and ready for whatever is just around the corner. In fashion work, Susan finds it policy to expect the unexpected.

Here she's all set and ready to go. Where? Well, maybe Paris—maybe

If you think they’d appreciate Susan in Paris, let us assure you she’s already appreciated so much here that she’d only go over our recumbent inertia.

The Impact Had A Lasting Effect

When we first introduced SUSAN DOUGLAS to our readers the impact had a kind of ringing sound, loud and clanging in many cases.

The effect on some was lasting. There has never been any other girl quite like Susan to them, her pin-up appeal remaining constant and even devastating. Fellers have shot themselves with water pistols on account of their love being so faithful but, alas, so unreciprocated.

Susan, now a lovely Kentish housewife, has been understanding but firm. "I'm always absolutely enchanted by your devotion," she says to her fans, "but I'm sure you realise I must get home to peel the potatoes and pick up some rice crispies on the way. Honestly. I would adore living on a desert island with any of you, but how could I get to my hairdresser twice a week without it being ruinously expensive?"

For a woman, especially a lovely one. that's clear, clinical logic.

In Your Opinion

Yes, in your opinion one of the most fascinating models of today is SUSAN DOUGLAS.

Susan, principally a fashion model, lives in Kent and has acquired the talent to look just the way you like her to look in every outfit and every pose. Her fans are spread all over the world. Frenchmen ring us up and ask us to fly her over to Paris, where they’ll meet her with flowers and perfumes. Italians want to pinch her. Americans want to give her film tests.

Susan, however, keeps her head about it all. She likes things as they are. She doesn’t want to jump over the moon. It’ll make her giddy. She’s happy, contented and swinging.

And how do you like her zingy pants?

Summer Weight

Now that summer is really here it’s warm enough for SUSAN DOUGLAS to model her summer weight lingerie, which makes her the coolest girl we know. This, of course, is recommended to be just the right weight to wear under a Courreges-style outfit. Slick, mod and unobtrusive. Lovely, in fact

In Response To

We get all kinds of readers figuratively clouting us whenever we’re remiss enough to leave out their favourite pin-up girls. Really keen fans are like hungry tigers—they’ll eat you if you upset them. So in response to any amount of hungry tigers here is their pride and joy, SUSAN DOUGLAS, in her latest fascinating pictures. These should save us from being gobbled up for at least a month.

New Discovery

It was our lucky day when we discovered that acme of secretarial elegance, PATRICIA GARLAND of Kent. Or did Pat discover us? She came into our office to ask us if we thought she would make a passable pin-up model. Passable was putting it mildly. Pat's a perfect pin-up pet—she has a happy smile and long, long legs. We don’t ask for a better pin-up picture than Pat makes, and if we had to switch secretaries at all we’d indent for a switch just like Pat.

In black lingerie, which she models with natural elegance —to say nothing of an air of bewitching femininity—Pat only needs a white stole to produce a finishing touch effective enough to catch any eye that might otherwise wander.

And if you aren't sure what this beguiling look adds to the picture, have the answer on us—for we aren't sure, either. Except we feel kinda sent.

Pat is one of our most attractive 1961 discoveries, and we hope to present her in various pin-up moods in coming months.

Your Kind of Girl

Unanimously established as the kind of girl you’d most like to take out for dinner with no expense spared, as long as she doesn’t ask for oysters at four quid a dozen, is of course SUSAN DOUGLAS. Always elegant, always eye-catching always your dream girl.

We feel the same way about her.

Very Fitting

Very frustrating indeed, as well as cosy and cute, are the long johns worn by SUSAN DOUGLAS.

We Have To

Everytime we omit to include SUSAN DOUGLAS in any of our issues, her fans rise up and write angry letters to us. Many of these letters describe our letdown of their expectations as a despicable campaign in favour of the indescribable dregs, whatever that may mean. This never fails to make trouble— someone has to carry the can. And Susan’s fans are entitled to that much. We do feature her very regularly. We have to. They’d tear the place down brick by brick otherwise.

We’d feel all exposed if we had to carry on with only the rubble around us. You can’t tear a place down and put it up again overnight. And even if you could, what would the unions say?

Susan Douglas

How Do They Really Look?

Girl who wants to know how the modern equivalent of Amelia Bloomer’s reach-me-downs look on her is our inimitable SUSAN DOUGLAS.

We don’t want to publicise our own bias in the matter.

We leave it to you.

You say.

Where Are The Elements

It doesn't matter all that much where they are, if they aren’t with us now they will be any moment. They've got a habit of not leaving us alone for too long, and since SUSAN DOUGLAS is well aware of this, she’s gotten herself self well equipped to cope with them.

Apropos the wind and the rain, of course. Susan is just the girl we wouldn’t mind being cast adrift with in a boat to the fair isles of sunshine and coconuts and nobody else.

Boots for Susan

You can’t beat a pair of thigh-length boots if you want to be looked at this year. They’re in, you know. SUSAN DOUGLAS had to have a pair and be as swinging as the other girls. You can have a hat or a jerkin or a bolero top, but you’re not swinging unless you’ve got boots as well.

Smashing.

Patricia Garland - Update

Pat Garland

I had a nice email from Susan Douglas’s eldest son this week, after his daughter found her grandmother’s profile page by accident. He has been kind enough to fill in a few gaps for me. Some details  I will cover here, but I have updated her page to reflect others.

Susan (Pat) sadly passed away 22nd February 2010 when she was 73, I am now also able to correct her date of birth to April 1938. I am told, though, that she would have been delighted that we always thought her younger than she really was! Susan Douglas was not her real name of course, She was really Patricia Garland, which I think we all knew anyway (but she did prefer to be called Pat). She decided on the name Susan Douglas so she was harder to trace - with Susan coming from a friend’s daughter and Douglas coming from the actor Kirk Douglas, whose films she was fond of.

Susan was one of the most photographed ToCo models. She was born and lived reasonably close to the Croydon office and was obviously well in with the staff, as she and her family used to holiday in Cornwall at the editors (Staples) house. It would appear that when she wasn’t modelling she helped in the offices and advised other models on their make up and clothes, Susans oldest son used to go along to the Croydon office in the school holidays when his mum was working. It would also appear that Staples ran a sweatshirt printing business and we can see Susan modelling one of his shirts in Spick No 180, possibly leaning against his Jaguar.

One other thing that always intrigued me about Susan was  that bangle that she frequently wore on her left arm above her elbow. The bangle was her Grandmother’s and was a lucky charm to her. Susan was always fond of jewellery and was always one for doing things her own way.

Luckily for us.

The Silly Season

Now that winter is here the girls are going in for all kinds of bizarre garments.

A bizarre garment is a garment designed to keep a girl looking kooky and feeling warm. Fashions are at their kookiest at the moment, as you know, what with feather boars and hats like the cowboy’s wear.

Amongst the kookiest girls it's the silly season.

SUSAN DOUGLAS, who is among the most elegant and well-dressed models we know, is also among those who go in for long pants—these are indeed very kooky but marvellously warm.

You can't take umbrage at the dears when they make life so exciting for us. You can always look forward to the time when the silly season is over and they've exchanged their feather boars for parasols and their long pants for bars of chocolate.
